Ted had been so successful selling Compact™ brand vacuum cleaners door-to-door that he needed a storefront to sell the trade-ins he was accumulating.
The space needed for storing and repairing the used vacuums continued to grow, and by 1963 (shortly after Ted's son Dan took over the store), the family was forced to make their home elsewhere. By 1998, Dan Hagen was ready to retire, and the most promising person to take over the business was someone who had been working at the shop since he was 14 years old.
